we are pumped!

Get ready for the ultimate pump track experience! We are thrilled to share our plans to build a world-class, asphalt pump track in Centennial Park. Designed and constructed by renowned pump track experts Velosolutions, the SC MTB Pump Track project is set to elevate your riding to new heights.

If you're unfamiliar with a pump track, it's a circuit featuring a series of carefully spaced rollers and berms. Instead of relying solely on pedalling, riders use their body movements to "pump" these features, generating forward momentum and speed. As your skills progress on the SC MTB Pump Track, you'll be able to utilise the gained speed for jumps and transfers, honing your abilities in all areas of trail riding.

The proposed location for this exciting addition is the western end of the park, near the roadside where the creek passes beneath the road. To complement the central pump track, we also plan to create a skills area utilizing the natural features of the terrain and the existing trail network.

An asphalt pump track of this calibre will be a tremendous asset to the community. It's designed to cater to riders of all levels, providing a space for skill improvement and testing. What's more, the smooth asphalt surface will not only attract bike riders of all ages but also scooter and skateboard enthusiasts!

As we embark on this ambitious SC MTB Pump Track project, fundraising efforts are in full swing. Stay tuned for updates and progress in the coming weeks and months as we work towards making this vision a reality.

In the meantime, here's a glimpse of the excitement that awaits you in Timaru's future pump track!

We are excited to kickstart our fundraising efforts towards our goal of $250,000 for the construction of the world class pump track in Centennial Park! We are reaching out to the incredible members of our community and local businesses to rally together and support this exciting project.

By contributing to our fundraising campaign, you can play a vital role in making the pump track a reality. Your generous donations will help us bring this thrilling facility to Timaru, providing a safe and exhilarating space for riders of all ages and abilities.

Additionally, we are offering "We Are Pumped!" club t-shirts for sale. Not only will you be able to show your support for the pump track project, but all proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go directly towards funding the construction.

We invite you to join us in this exciting venture by making a donation, spreading the word about our cause, and considering purchasing a t-shirt. With your support, we can bring the pump track to life and create a lasting impact on our community. Together, let's pump up the enthusiasm and make this project a reality!

FAQ's

What is a pump track?

Pump tracks are both playgrounds and training facilities for bikers, skateboarders or scooter riders of all skill levels. Asphalted tracks are hotspots for all kinds of riders who seek a fun and action-filled sports experience. Pump tracks are highly popular destinations that become a hive of community activity. Riders enjoy practising the basic skills of carrying momentum, improving balance and building speed by using their arms and legs to pump their bike/board/scooter around the track. As riders improve their skills, the tracks are designed to provide the option for more challenges with increased speed and skill, without needing to change the construction. A feature that a 5-year-old can roll through can be used as a gap jump for a professional.

Where is it going?

The proposed location for this exciting addition is the western end of Centennial Park, near the roadside where the creek passes beneath the road. To complement the central pump track, we also plan to create a skills area utilising the natural features of the terrain and the existing trail network.

who is involved?

The primary driver of this project is the South Canterbury Mountain Biking Club. The club is an incorporated society led by a group of voluntary committee members. SC MTB Club built and has maintained all mountain bike tracks in Centennial Park for 40 years and works closely with the land owner Timaru District Council.

While the whole committee are involved in the project there has been a dedicated fundraising committee established to drive the campaign. This committee consists of club members Steve Kroening, Scotty Mitchell, Paul Walker, Paul Buckley and Aoraki Foundation’s Richard Spackman

who will build it?

The track will be designed and constructed by renowned pump track experts Velosolutions. Velosolutions is the pioneer of asphalt pump tracks and has built more than 500 tracks across 50 countries.

Each pump track is unique and is built to the highest standard of quality. Look out for the famous “red lines” on their pump tracks! If you’re riding the red line, you’ll be having the official Velosolutions experience.

how much is needed?

The total project will cost the club approximately $250,000. We have already raised $70,000 of this from grants and our own reserves. It is anticipated that a further $80,000 will come from larger funders leaving $100,000 to come from the public and business community.
